The technology isn’t quite there yet for your car to tell you exactly what’s wrong. But there are signs! The so-called dashboard warning lights help you take better care of your car and alert you to potential safety issues. In this blog, you’ll find out what these lights mean.

Green, yellow, red, and blue – here’s what the colors mean.

Depending on the issue or its severity, the warning lights on your dashboard light up in different colors. In general, the traffic light principle applies:

Green: A function is active. For example, low beam headlights, fog lights, turn signals, cruise control, etc.

Yellow: Caution! A problem or defect has occurred. For instance, your fuel tank or windshield washer fluid might be running low, or safety systems may be showing a fault — like ABS*, EPC*, tire pressure, or ESP*. You can still drive the car, but it’s recommended to visit a mechanic, especially when it comes to systems like ABS, ESP, or EPC.

Red: Stop! You should not continue driving. This color lights up when the driver or passengers aren’t wearing seatbelts, if there’s an airbag malfunction, if doors are still open, or if the handbrake is engaged.

Red lights can also indicate serious issues like a transmission problem. In any case, a professional should take a look at the issue. You can find your partner garage here.

Blue: This color is an exception to the traffic light system. It simply indicates that your high beams are on.

*ABS = Anti-lock Braking System | EPC = Electronic Power Control (commonly known as traction control) | ESP = Electronic Stability Program (lights up during stability loss; staying on means there’s a malfunction)

Important but rare warning lights you should know about

EPC: EPC stands for Electronic Power Control. This system provides traction control to help prevent skidding and improve maneuverability. It activates automatically when it detects a situation where an accident could be avoided. However, each car manufacturer may call this system something different. When starting your subscription, ask our team what it’s called in your specific vehicle.

Glow Plug Warning: This light only appears in diesel vehicles. If it’s on, you should wait before starting the engine, especially when it’s cold. If the light doesn’t go off after a while, the car needs to be checked in a workshop.

Brake Pad Wear: Warning – your brakes are nearing the end of their lifespan. The brake pads are almost worn out and should be replaced during your next service appointment.

Coolant Temperature: This light rarely comes on, but it may indicate that your coolant level is low. Wait until the engine is completely cool before refilling. Refilling while the engine is still hot can cause burns. If the light stays on even after refilling, do not continue driving.

Dashboard warning lights – this is what they look like

Can vary depending on the manufacturer

The tire pressure warning is not something you should ignore!

“Sometimes the message pops up saying there’s something wrong with the tire pressure.” “Then it just disappears while I’m driving.” Even our founder, Léa Miggiano, actively engages with this common phenomenon. If the warning keeps appearing and disappearing regularly, you should definitely check your tire pressure.

If the tire pressure light disappears and doesn’t come back again soon, these might be the reasons:

  • Temperature: Cold air contracts, which lowers tire pressure. So on chilly mornings, the sensor might briefly show a warning. As the tires warm up while driving or as the temperature rises, the pressure increases again, and the warning light turns off.
  • Sensor malfunction: These sensors often run on batteries, which can eventually run out. A technical defect is also possible. Your partner garage can help you check and fix the issue.
  • New set of wheels: Depending on your car model, the system may need a manual confirmation of the new tires' pressure. If this step is missed during a service, it could trigger the warning light.
